eClass Templates for Face-to-Face Courses

Are you planning to use eClass for the first time with a course you will be teaching in the winter term? Tech PD is piloting a template that might make your life a little easier.

We’ve been working to develop a template that provides commonly used elements for an eClass section that is a compliment to a face-to-face course. These templates have some basic formatting already built in and utilize a new set of banners developed by AICT e-Learning in consultation with Tech PD. We now have one for each department and are ready to pilot them.

The template comes with a Start Here module that provides students with directions for setting up their computers for eClass and directs them to resources to help them learn how to use eClass and its various tools. Information on where to get help and answers to frequently asked questions are also part of the module. The Start Here module can be customized to reflect the needs of your particular course.

If you are interested in using the template, here’s what you need to do.

  1. When you request your eClass section using the online Request a Course form available through the e-Learning web page, ask for a blank course to be created.
  2. Once the course has been created (you will receive an email and you will see it in your list of courses when you log in to eClass), send the name of the eClass section to me at amy.meckelborg@ualberta.ca and ask me to apply the face-to-face template for your department.
  3. I will email you when it has been applied. You can then log into your eClass section and edit the template to fit your tastes and needs. If you need help with editing or building your eClass site, let me know. I’d be happy to meet with you and provide any direction and assistance I can.
  4. Because the template is in the pilot phase, we are very interested in getting your feedback on how easy it is to work with and whether the content provided is adequate and/or relevant. If we don’t hear from you, we will contact you to get your feedback before the end of the winter term.

DigiTLE is doing something similar with it's departments in Science as well. We are also incorporating as many OER that we can find.

That sounds interesting. Can you be more specific about the kinds of Open Educational Resources and how you are incorporating them?
